Geometry

Today we had another drawing workshop with Charlotte Mann, which consisted of shape and accuracy. For the first part of the workshop we were told to try and draw a square, circle and a rectangle as accurately as we could free hand. Sounded slightly pointless and that it would be easy at first, but when I actually sat down and tried to draw the simple shapes freehand with exact accuracy, it was actually really difficult... To the eye it can sometimes look like you've drawn a perfect square, or a perfect circle. But when you measure it afterwards, you then realise it's no way near accurate. The more I did it and the more I concentrated, the better my shapes got. Trying to pin point the middle of the shape was also rather tricky, but it's all about practice. It's not something someone can just do straight away, and very rarely can one just draw a shape which is exactly correct. It's all about patience and concentration.

We then had to choose a geometric pattern and try to copy it free hand. This was all about accuracy, not neatness. It was all about using your eyes and judging lines, and finding ways to measure edges without using a ruler.
