Sir John Soane's Museum

Sir John Soane 1753- 1837
"The best house-museum in the world"

As I stood outside the museum, I observed the three traditional London town houses that it was made up of, overlooking Lincoln's Inn Fields. Soane was an architect who designed his own house to live in, alongside his works of art and his collection of antiques. He was constantly adding to his collection and therefore he bought both houses either side of his original house to expand it, which left him with three houses; number 12, 13 and 14. He demolished and rebuilt these houses to suit his vast collections.

It was fascinating to see how many antiques and pieces of art he had collected, and managed to fit inside the three houses. It was evident that Soane was an architect just by looking at the design of the houses and the way it had been rebuilt. I visited the museum late afternoon, and by this time it was getting dark. The museum was candle light, which created a very atmospheric environment whilst walking around the museum.

I would recommend visiting this museum, as I haven't come across any other quite like it. Definitely well worth a visit.
