CRAZY OBSESSIONS

COLLECTING SEX DOLLS...

"it can bring about a reactive satisfaction that is every bit as intense. In which case, the object in question should undoubtedly be seen as a 'loved object'  The System of Collecting, Baudrillard.

When I watched this video, I genuinely thought it was one of the weirdest videos I've ever watched about collecting. I couldn't believe how serious they were and how obsessed they were.
This couple have the largest love doll collection in the world, which is worth $150,000- nearly equal to the value of their home on 1 acre of land in the British countryside. They have 240 dolls (probably more now as this was from last year) and each doll costs upwards $4500 each. They said they don't have enough space in their house to store them, so they have resulted to using methods of storage such as coffins!

"We didn't do anything much together before we had the dolls" "the dolls are a way for Bob and I to spend time together" says the wife.

One of the reasons I found this video so strange is because the collectors are a couple, and with a collection of dolls that are usually meant for other uses, I found it extremely bizarre. The fact that they were older as well made me think it was even stranger, would the dolls not be a threat to their relationship? Would the husband build up relationships with the dolls? Would the wife get jealous? The couple don't just collect the dolls, they live with them. They eat meals with them, dance with them, talk to them. When the wife says how they didn't do much before they had the dolls, It suggests that the dolls offer some kind of security in their relationship and how their relationship wasn't healthy to start off with.

"The active phase of collecting seems to occur between the age of seven and twelve, during the period of latency prior to puberty""Later on, it is men in their fourties who seem most prone to the passion." The Culture of Collecting, John Elsner.

Perhaps the husband needed a bit more company and excitement in his relationship? The dolls give him something to do?

" This is why one invests in objects all that one finds impossible to invest in human relationships. This is why man so quickly seeks out the company of objects when he needs to recuperate." The System of Collecting, Baudrillard.

"it is ideal in that it reflects images not of what is real, but only of what is desirable'

For me, the item that was being collected in this video was very significant to my opinion, rather than the fact they are obsessive collectors.
