The start of my POPUP project

‘Your desk is your space’

The aim of the POPUP project is to ‘create and assemble a visually exciting Popup collection of objects that interconnect in a variety of ways to illuminate some aspect of your contemporary experience.’ My first approach to the project was thinking about possible collections, perhaps representing a place, a personal experience, a journey, a favourite memory or even a narrative. After brainstorming my ideas, I decided that the inside of a handbag would be particularly interesting. I collected items found in my own handbag, as well as my friends.

I found the concept of collecting items from a handbag stimulating as you can almost identify one’s interests and personality just from the items they have in their handbag. For example train tickets can allow us to work out where the owner has been travelling, receipts can allow us to distinguish what type of clothes they wear and what type of food they eat, and the colour palette of one’s make-up helps suggest what image visually they go for. As handbags are most commonly worn by females, my collection consists of a feminine colour palette, although depending on which handbag I collected objects from this varied. I chose five words that represented my collection: FEMININE, PERSONAL, TRAVEL, NEUTRAL, and EXPERIENCES.

During studio time we experimented drawing our objects in various ways. For example we did series of line drawings as well as drawing our objects to portray different textures such as smooth, fury, spikey, sharp and shiny. I particularly enjoyed combining a group of objects together and drawing each one as a different texture, layering them up.
