Rough Guide Project

My first project at Chelsea was to create a collaborative magazine as a class that guided a reader around London, focusing on five different locations demonstrating the diversity that exists within London. I was briefed to explore the area and visually map out Kensington/Notting Hill. Whilst wondering the streets I was trying to gather as much research as I could. I collected items I found on the floor, rubbings, photography, drawings and wrote down my thought process of ideas.

Whilst collecting my research and exploring the area, I was trying to come up with a concept that had particularly interested me. I wanted to find a concept that represented an aspect of Kensington, accentuating its originality of a place. Therefore if the reader was to visit Kensington, they would recognize my concept whilst exploring the area. I decided to look at the houses in Kensington which immediately give off the impression of a wealthy and exclusive society. I was interested in the high upkeep of the houses, with a very ordered yet sophisticated look; classy black railings, repeated potted plants and columns, with almost identical black and white designs.

Once I had decided on this concept, I created a further series of research pages to convey the image of the wealthy houses including different textures and colour. (Bottom left, my decided page for the 'Rough Guide' magazine). On each page, I customized it adding texture and colour to it.

The final outcome...BA Textile Design 'Rough Guide' collaborative project:
